Default *Discussion* the ability to change your characters name

Quote:
Response (GM Oghma) 12/05/2007 05:21 PM
Hello,

Thank you for contacting the Guild Wars Support Team.

The ability to change the name of your characters in Guild Wars is a feature that we are considering as an addition to the game, but is not an option at this time. (The only exceptions to this are characters with names that violate our User Agreement or Rules of Conduct. Such characters must be renamed by their players with an automated name violations tool, or the character must be deleted.)

If a name-change feature is something you would like to see as part of the Guild Wars service, then we encourage you to share your suggestions on one of the many Guild Wars fansite message boards. A listing of forums and fansites can be found within the Community section of the official Guild Wars website at: http://www.guildwars.com/community/fansites/. By posting on a fansite message board, other players can comment on your ideas, concerns, and suggestions, which will allow Development Team members to monitor the feedback and gauge what the community wants to see in Guild Wars in the future. Fansite forums are an efficient way for us to obtain feedback from fans and to discern how players feel Guild Wars could be made even better.

Please contact us again if you have further questions.

Kind regards,

The Guild Wars Support Team
this was the response i got after asking if i could change a character of mines name. BREAKTHROUGH MUCH?
i will be starting a thread on gwg concerning this asap, but i would also like to know your own opinions?

my view on this is. WHY NOT? the f/l is linked via accounts rather then ign's so what difference would it make. i see no negative sides to this.

scammers can easily create new chars, in gw's there are very few scams that dont involve the other pereson not paying attention. simply pay more attention. change a chars name will benefit more then it will not. to me taht is justification enough. i have not thought of a single reason not to allow it

maybe limit it to 2 name changes per character per month or something?

Any good RPer picks a good name when making a character, as he knows a bad name will bring him grief later on.
Actually many people stick to limited list of names they want to use, they hate changing if their names happen to be taken, so they'd have little use for the ability to change them.

Also I agree with Drop of Fear.

What I would like is the ability to change a nick, a name you give yourself as purely an additional visual component, not something that overwrites your char name.
So it would be Othar The Just at character creation.
You'd use the hero panel(with faction and stuff) to change it.
While on n00b isle it's Othar "N00blet" The Just, as to get more sympathy.
And in Unwaking waters its Othar "Skillcrusher" The Just, to show off both they are more confident of themselves and the disabler/interruption build they are running.

Something like that would only be visible on mouse over, not in chat and things, its a RP feature and basically just another something to show off with.

changing ones name doesn't hide their IP (at least with the GW setup)

that is why when you add people to your friends list, and they log in on their other character(s)...the name might mysteriously..change...but can still be tracked.

-maybe if they only run 1 character...or change all of their characters names at the same time might it work for scammers.

actually, ip has nothing to do with anything related to guild wars. it is the account that is bound to that particular name.

i was ever for it and also don't see any prblems with it, when the system gets regulated to a maximum use of 1 change per month or so ...

As said, people, who want to scam, scam also without the ability to name change, just by puttign stuff quick into their chest, log out, delete character and make new one ...

thats absolutely the same, as if someone changes normally his name, with the exception, that a character doesn't get deleted and when the one, who got scammed, had put in the name of the scammer into his fl, before the scammer had the chance to exchange his name, then will the scammed one see it...

also the servers will recognize, when someone changes a character name.... the people of anet can find out the moment, when character x changed a name, as like they can find out, when character x wrote sentence Y into the local chat

So the scammed player just needs to report the scammer by reporting the old name and the new name and which items he/she got scammed or how much money ect. pp.

then can anet check these informations and if the informations were correct, the scammer can be banned and the scammed one can receive his stuff back

i really see now problem in that....other then naturally that anet needs then again some more support people, which will do the work ..people, which want to be payed for their work ect pp = monthly fee danger ^^

I made a dervish with the name No Btching K Thx months before the report system was made, and got banned for a few days for it, which is unfair as all hell. I'm all for it, but I know it won't happen.

Wow, alarmist much? Personally, I'd love this feature. If anything it's far more time-efficient than rolling a new character.

Actually, that is generally the explination given. There is no reason you'd have to change your name if you just took a little bit of time and thought about the name you were going to use before making a character. This option is just open to abuse by people who will change their names frequently (guild infiltrations, trade scams, shill scams, etc). Just... no

I find this view a little onesided, as there are certain cases where name changes should be applicable. There are characters out there that are reaching 2 and a half years now; to say that one might not mature in 2 and a half years, might become a different person is simply untrue.

Say someone started playing when they were 14 and a half, and being the asinine little teenager they were, named their character Xx I Pwn You Xx or some other ridiculous title. They grow on, taking their career through and through until the present; now 17 and still playing GW, they realize how incredibly idiotic and jokeworthy the name was, but don't want to lose a well invested character by remaking.

Or take my own case; I am an RPer, and my character recently married in game. Par the custom, I would love to change her last name to that of my husband's, but because of the name limitations, this is not possible. Characters (like people, par the last example) change over time - a name change feature to reflect that would be sublime.

If truly necessary, we could put in a large requirement to get that name change, that shows you've got a large and dedicated investment in a particular character. 10k, or 100 skill points, or something of the like.
